Binghamton Mayor Rich David Considers Run For Senate Seat Being Vacated By Fred Akshar

City of Binghamton Mayor Rich David says he is considering a run for state senate after current Senator Fred Akshar announced he will be running for Broome County Sheriff in 2022.

In a statement sent to local media, David says he has received "an outpouring of support encouraging [him] to run for his senate seat."

For more than seven years, I've worked to deliver for residents in the City of Binghamton. The opportunity to serve in the New York State Senate would allow me to continue my commitment to the people of Binghamton, and work for the residents of Broome, Chenango, Delaware, and Tioga counties.

- Rich David, (R) Mayor City of Binghamton

The Republican mayor is in his second and last term in the office. Term limits make another run for mayor impossible. David was in attendance at Akshar's Broome Sheriff's campaign announcement on Thursday.

David says he has formed an exploratory committee to look into the possibility of running and he expects to make an announcement in the coming weeks.
